Introduction to my E-PortfolioIn the following tabs, you will find a number of lesson plans and artifacts which utilize technology to augment English education. The activities here are geared toward high schoolers (9-10th grade & 11-12th grade) under the Utah Core Standards in reading, writing, and speaking & listening. The artifacts found are also in accordance to ISTE standards. However, as the product primarily of my imagination and adaptation, all ideas found here also reflect aspects of my own philosophy of education.
My PedagogyGrowing up in schools privileged through private funding and suburban middle class socioeconomic status, I experienced firsthand what benefits our society can provide. It is my belief that these benefits can be extended to the farthest reaches of our public education system if only the historical prejudice and segregation toward all groups of marginalized people can be met with due reparations.
The greatest thing I gained from my education was the power to think for myself and the confidence to pursue my own vision. Additionally, it was to shed light on my role as a citizen of the United States, and my privilege to foster change in the world. My role as an English teacher is to work to give every student an entry point to literacy and critical thinking skills that will grant them access and ability to pursue and achieve the lifestyle they desire to lead as well as contribute wisely and considerately to our democratic society. To do so, I believe in introducing students to texts and content both familiar and foreign to their understanding and tastes. The aim is to stimulate their interest, and also to challenge them. In my classroom, students will learn skills to know themselves and to know their peers, near and abroad, through literature foremost, but also through the powers of communication. When it comes to technology integration, I see the materials of a 21st century classroom as an opportunity to bridge the minds of students to other cultures and perspectives. It is proven that students learn best when they are nourished and encouraged while participating in activities that excite them. I also believe that students learn best when they know why they are learning and how they can realistically use the skills they are learning. For English, the challenge is giving students evidence of “real-world” application. However, technology provides ample example of where talented readers, writers, and thinkers fit into society. My hope is that my students will learn to transfer their skills through strategies that appeal to their interests, social backgrounds, and challenge their cognitive levels, and that they will continue to set aspirations for themselves, in spite of what forces may work against them. |
